What to wear for business photos, and how to prepare.

Before you arrive:

  • Groom/style hair. Brush your teeth.

  • Wear clothing that fits properly. Iron it if needed.

  • Wear clothing that reflects the brand you are representing.

  • If wearing makeup, don’t overdo foundation.

  • If you shave regularly, shave prior to your session.

Please avoid:

  • Tank tops (unless you’re a fitness instructor.)

  • Bold stripes (they don’t photograph well, no matter how good they look in person.)

  • Cutting your own hair in the car. (yes, I have to write this here.)

Headshots for a traditional business

For traditional corporate jobs, a shirt and tie (or a blouse) with a jacket is most appropriate. The focus should be on the individual, and not the clothing, so generally something solid color and fairly neutral works best. Avoid bold prints, or large jewelry to keep the focus on your face.

Headshots for a more casual business

For less formal businesses, you may want to consider something with your logo or branding on it, or something in your brand colors. That way, the images will coordinate with your website and social media, and will reinforce the strength of your brand.

Don't wear stripes or checks.jpg

Why avoid stripes?

Stripes don’t photograph well, and can look distorted when presented online. The shot shown at left is an example. While his outfit looked great in person, it did not show up well online. This can sometimes be a result of resizing, or resolution not being high enough, but it’s easiest to avoid the issue all together.
